What Grain sends

Grain sends anonymous usage data so we can see which features people use and where setup fails. The website counts anonymous usage unless your browser sends Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control. The VS Code extension and Grain service have their own settings.

Grain never sends any of the following:

  • SQL text or query results
  • Passwords or other credentials
  • Host names, database names, or schema, table and column names
  • Your prompts to an agent, or raw database error messages

When an agent’s tool call fails, Grain sends the database error code, e.g., ELOGIN, and never the error message.

Crash reports

The VS Code extension sends crash reports with the stack trace. Grain removes user names and personal file paths before a report is sent, and it drops any report it can’t clean.

Turn telemetry off

  • In VS Code, set grain.telemetry.enabled to false. Grain also sends nothing when VS Code’s own telemetry is off.
  • On the website, turn on Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control in your browser.
  • To turn it off for the Grain service, run grain install --no-telemetry after installing. Grain remembers the choice.

The Grain website

The website uses PostHog analytics, which stores an anonymous ID in a cookie and in your browser’s local storage. Requests go through a grain.tools proxy that passes on your IP address so PostHog can work out your rough location. When an AI crawler reads the site, Grain records only the crawler’s name and no IP address.

Questions you type into the website demo are sent to OpenRouter, which turns them into SQL over a sample orders table. Your IP address is hashed with a key that changes every day, and the hash is used only to apply a daily limit on questions.

Agent plugins

The Grain plugins for Claude Code, Codex and Cursor install the same Grain that runs on your machine. Everything on this page applies to them in the same way.

Your data

Grain runs on your machine. It has no accounts, and your credentials, SQL and query results are never copied to a server we run. We do not sell data.

To ask what we hold, or to have data tied to your install ID deleted, email hi@pattrnlabs.com. Pattrnlabs publishes Grain.
